Question:
Why do Americans say "When are you going back?"?

I've meet so many Americans that say this, once they figure out that I'm a foreigner. "When are you going back?" or " Are you going back to Russia?" is often the question.

I never understand their mentality, it's almost an insult to me, when they say it. Maybe I should reply and say "Why do you go back to Germany".

It's none of their business telling strangers they never meet to back to a pervious country.

They are probably just making conversation, really.

I never looked at it that way, but I see your point. Most people who are students/etc. from other countries are only here for a certain amount of time. No one is hoping you go back, so please don't take it that way.

The gals are probably asking to try not to fall for you too hard if you're leaving soon, cutie! Ever thought of it like that? We American women are just smitten with accents, you know. It's true. Russian men sound sexy.

I think you should try to lighten up and point out that everyone asks you that the next time you are asked.

By the way, when ARE you going back?

:-) oh I am sorry, I just couldn't help it.

This is just a colloquial or slang way of speaking. It doesn't mean literally that they want you to go home, or that you should go home...It is a way of asking "How long is your vacation/stay here?" Americans get such a small amount of holiday every year that it is common for people to want to know "how long" and "when" because they like to admire or be jealous of a long, enjoyable vacation. So, generally it is a positive question. Hope this helps! Americans speak with a lot of strange local saying and slang.

Alot of times whem we meet people with accents from a different country, they're here visiting someone. If you were in Russia and you met an American person wouldn't you assume they were coming back to the US?

Its not being rude, at least I hope its not, its mostly curiosity. Americans are very forward people, not much tact or decorum. If we have questions we ask them. Thats all.
