I plan to take a vacation to Moscow Russia alone in the near future and I have some questions on my mind.

1. Is the english language common there? I am wondering if I can get by speaking english or if I should try to learn some survival phrases to get around. I plan on going to museums and hopefully a ballet or performance by the MSO.

2. What are some places I should see? I am a big fan of Russian music and art so I hope to catch a performance and see some art as well. I also love the architecture so I plan on visiting some of the major churches.

3. Anything I should know or be aware of as I travel to Russia in the near future? Also any other things or places I should see that relate to my interests?

1. As an American living in Moscow I can assure you that your English will be useless here, unless you meet some native English speakers who know the language and can translate for you. Learning the alphabet is a must, especially if you want to use the Metro. If you don't know the language, then read the history behind the exhibits at the museum/cathedrals before you actually go, because a lot of them don't necessarily have information in English. Honestly I can't imagine being here and not knowing the language, it would be exhausting.

2. You can get tickets to performances at the little theatre of the Conservatory for $10 (300 rubles), I went to one recently and it was great, especially for the price. I'd go again if I had the time. The Conservatory is right down the street from Red Square so it should be easy to find.

3. My favorite place is Sparrow Hills, definitely give it a look.

Check Moscow tourism and also St-Petersburg tourism Russians are very nice and very helpful. It would be a plus for you if you could at least read the Russian script and know a few words - though not entirely necessary as there are plenty of people who know a good bit of English. Bring you camera and enjoy the numerous and so gorgeous métro stations (where yu can easily gwt lost!). You will also need a so-called letter of invitation: no letter, no visa.. Some travel agents can be the intermediary and get both for you from the consulate or embassy before you leave.

1. Since Moscow is such a huge tourist destination I am sure you can get by without knowing much Russian (Especially in very touristy areas and hotels and such. Probably not in smaller markets or smaller shops.) You should probably learn some Russian phrases like "Thank you", "I'm sorry", "Please", numbers, and how to say something like "I'm sorry, I don't speak Russian. Do you speak English?".

2. I'm not Russian nor have I ever been there so I can't tell you that. I am sure there are other people in this section who can give you advice on this.

3. Just general travel tips and such. Be careful with your belongings, be polite to people, don't wander into the middle of nowhere because you might get lost / every major city has criminals.
